The picture above shows only one of 20 new shyrdaks, which we have acquired during our trip to Kyrgyzstan in October 2015.
It was a partly very hard but at times also very fulfilling trip to the mountain villages of this beautiful country. A number of the producers visited, are producing exclusively for karpet and were therefore particularly happy about the direct support, which our purchases meant for them and their lives.
Currently, the new rugs are on their way to Europe, where we will treat them against moths and otherwise prepare them for resale. It will therefore take a few more weeks until we can announce the additions to our assortment on these pages. In the first half of October 2015, we will travelling to an through Kyrgyzstan for our extensive karpet Shyrdak shopping tour. We will visit our local producers directly in their villages. Thus, our trip will bring us deep into this beautiful country: We will visit the villages Kochkor, Naryn, At-Bashi to name just a few.
We expect our first new delivery in December. As we are planning to make many new orders, there will be more karpet Shyrdaks available here from Spring 2016 onwards.
At the start of July 2014, Noemi Haag and Roger Renggli have handed over the management of karpet to Klaus Kukovetz (as CEO) and Miranda Kaloudis. After a very demanding build-up period, Noemi and Roger want now to remain involved with karpet from in a consulting function from the background. For our customers and distribution partners, this change involves a couple of advantages, the most important ones being the following:
Traditional felt rugs are one of the foremost arts of the Kyrgyz people and an integral part of their cultural heritage. Knowledge, skills, diversity, the semantics of ornamentation and the ceremonies of creating rugs are all important cultural components, providing Kyrgyz people with a sense of identity and continuity.
