The Kyrgyz felt rugs have a millennia-old tradition.
Through millennia-old tradition, the nomadic women of Kyrgyzstan create precious felt rugs: Shyrdaks. Each piece is unique. These handmade rugs fascinate with their captivating beauty and sensual touch. The symbols and colours tell the story of each rug’s origin and creation. The tradition is passed down from generation to generation.
A rug is manufactured by the entire community in a worldwide unique technique during one year and is fully handmade.
From manufacturing the single threads through to cutting the ornaments, every detail is handmade. Cut out ornaments are stitched together in a juxtaposition of positive and negative arrangement. This mosaic is then stitched on an equally large piece of felt, so that a double-layered, warm and soft rug is produced. All patterns are carefully framed with coloured outline cords.
The entire community is involved in some stage of the process, beginning with the sheep shearing in spring. The women take care of the processing and dyeing of the wool. The children help with felting, while having a lot of fun together. During the long winter, the women sit together and arrange the compositions and stitch the felt pieces to complete the rug.
Stylized animal horns, eagle claws and snowcapped mountain peaks.
The rugs impress with their traditional yet modern style. Stylized animal horns, eagle claws and snowcapped mountain peaks symbolize the desire for happiness, security and fertility. The symmetrical composition, the frequent reflection, the juxtaposition of positive and negative ornament and the intense colour scheme gives the rug a stunning elegance.
The felt provides a sensual touch.
Thanks to the long tradition, rich experience in felting and one of the best high mountain wools in the world, these rugs are of superb quality. The felt is pleasantly soft to touch, creates a comfortable environment and invites you to linger.
Felt has the ability to regulate humidity, thereby creating a comfortable indoor climate. These rugs are sound-dampening and stain-resistant, due to the natural spacing in the fibres and wool grease. They are a perfect playground in the nursery.
